Brian never failed to return a call quickly, answer any question and resolve any issue – large or small. It was also a very telling sign that he had solid relationships with so many of the contractors that were needed to complete this job.

We are particularly pleased that L&M truly listened to what we had in mind and incorporated our ideas into the design. They didn’t hesitate to challenge our suggestions where it wasn’t recommended yet always tried to make it work where possible.

As with most projects, there are issues, the willingness to work through them is key, which is very easy to do with Lear / Mahoney.

My husband and I engaged Lear & Mahoney this summer (May 2015) to re-scape our backyard after we took out some trees around our pool and discovered we had a huge blank slate that we had to turn into something. To further complicate matters, our property is on the slope of a small hillside, which made re-grading a difficult and daunting certainty. Brian Mahoney and his assistant, Gaelin, were eager, prompt, professional, kind and very engaging. What impressed us the most was that while every architect we interviewed saw the landscape as a problem to be solved (especially because of the varying grades), Brian saw it as an opportunity to work with the land and create something very natural. After wading through 3 ft of snow to map out the backyard, Brian presented us with one of the most original and impressive plans for our backyard. Where there was once only decking and a pool, we now had a green lawn, a modern, raised outdoor living room, a sunken fire pit, a new deck area for our lounge chairs, an outdoor shower and an accessible and usable pathway from the driveway to the backyard. In addition to the plans, we also received a very accurate budget with line by line cost expectations for each new area of the backyard. This was very helpful when we were interviewing contractors. We also received a comprehensive planting and lighting plan. Brian was very involved in our project from the design phase through the completion of construction. He made several site visits during construction to check on the work and make corrective requests when necessary. He was responsive when we had questions and was the consummate professional. Our project stayed on budget and on schedule and we actually got to enjoy our new backyard for most of the summer. Hire Lear & Mahoney – they will not disappoint.

Lear & Mahoney designed my backyard which included a pool, deck expansion, two outdoor accessory buildings, raised garden beds, walkways and state of the art gates and fencing along with new grading of the backyard. My experience working with Lear & Mahoney has been excellent.They bring a very professional, hands on approach to our project. There is an appreciated balance between the aesthetic and the function of what is being developed. I highly recommend them.

Speaking as a builder of houses, the landscaping of which have been done by Lear and Mahoney, three things stand out:

1. They are sensitive to taste and budget of a wide selection of clients, from the most extravagant to the most budget-conscious. They listen first rather than imposing one fixed idea on every job; then they work hard to make the best possible result within the stated goals of the client.

2. They have a broad experience of possibilities within their field, which enables them, after listening, to take the client beyond what was originally envisioned, without veering off the original parameters.

3. Their follow-up from blueprint to real-world execution is both patient and tenacious. Easy to work with; hard to get them to settle for less.

Brian was a perfect match for the design we had in mind. He understood the wind and weather issues that we would have on our bluff over looking the L.I. Sound. He also kept in mind that we like to spend most of the spring, summer and fall outside entertaining and relaxing. There are trees and flowering bushes blooming throughout the three seasons, and the orange bark of the Crape Myrtle is outstanding in the dead winter.
Brian considered every possible view point, even going upstairs into our bedroom to make sure our view would not be obscured by the trees he chose.
We went from not a single thing growing on the property, to a welcoming landscape framing the house and the view. Our daughter got married in our yard, our 3rd summer in the house. It was a beautiful reception, highlighted by the established plantings!
Brian is one of the nicest, easiest guys we have ever worked with! He listened to our concerns and had solutions and suggestions to satisfy them all. We planted exactly as his blue prints outlined!

Lear Mahoney planned and executed a $2 million landscape for 7 acres on the waterfront in North Haven on Long Island. This included extensive hardscape (terracing, walls, swimming pool, lighting) as well as trees, bushes and other plant materials.
The work done was outstanding. They took time to understand what we wanted and then brought creativity and a wonderful sense of the site to the design. The terracing they put in was quite brilliant in tying the house to the site. They integrated a very natural perspective with a subtle degree of structure.
They are professional in everything they do. They worked extremely well with the architect and project manager and work was executing quickly and thoroughly.
