His goal is to make you smile. I smile every time when I look at my backyard. His crew is wonderful as well. They were always on time. They were very efficient. I’ve worked with many different home contractors over the years and Richard Lusk is one the very best!

My project was to redo the front of my house with all new landscaping, irrigation, turf, natural stone walkway, driveway, custom designed fence with matching rails on the balcony of the second story, plus exterior lighting. Richard worked up drawings based on our feedback, suggested edits, and guided us through the design process. After we locked on a final design, he submitted our plans to our HOA and the City of Newport Beach and received approval.

After one month, the project was 99% complete and it looked fantastic!

The final open item was to paint the new fence. We asked Richard to hold off until we finalized the exterior color of the house, which also needed updating. The house painter was backed up for 2.5 months so Richard moved on to other projects as we waited. Three months later, Richard had been paid in full and was working other jobs, his team came back, painted the fence, replaced a few plants that were in distress, and adjusted the irrigation. You can trust Richard to do the right thing AND great work!

Richard was easy to work with, fast, efficient, and communicative.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Richard Lusk and his amazing team. Richard is honest, thorough, detail oriented and does the most amazing work. He completed transformed my backyard. It was not an easy job to add a pool due to our soils, yet he and his crew handled it like it was a breeze. It was a completely stress free process for me. Richard was always on top of everything and incredibly responsive. His crew is thoughtful, clean and detailed. I hired Richard to do a complete remodel of our backyard plus the addition of a closed-roof California room. I did not come into the project with much remodeling experience, but Richard was able to take my very vague ideas and bring them to life without issue. Not only was the work of the highest quality, but the speed at which the work was completed was remarkable. More time was spent waiting for HOA and city approvals than was spent completing my project, and every square inch of my backyard was re-done. There must have been 30-40 guys working on my house the day he broke ground. Richard was always available to answer any questions or concerns. Hire Richard if you want your project done right.

Richard Lusk and team are just amazing! Another reviewer said it and we have to agree – what a refreshing experience! We went from a dirt lot to a beautiful yard in what felt like overnight. Our project got done in half the time Richard originally estimated and far faster than anyone else quoted. Richard was there every step of the way and always made himself available. We would recommend Richard to anyone. He is organized, efficient, and never cuts any corners. He is honest and communicates very well. Not to mention he is a good guy and was fun to work with. He treated our large backyard project (pool, pool house, full landscape and hardscape) like it was his own, taking incredible care even on the smallest of details. What we loved most, however, was that whenever an issue come up, large or small, Richard simply took care of it, no questions asked.

Richard Lusk came to me highly recommended by John Feldman of Ecocentrix Landscape and Design. I read Richard’s reviews and portfolio and was very impressed, so I decided to sign a contract with him for my front and back yard renovation projects.

On Monday morning of October 17, Richard and his team of twenty or more workers came to my house working like a tornado, turning my front and back yard up side down.

Three weeks later, Richard and his team gave us a calm and serene back yard which has a bigger natural stone patio and a nice grass area for my grandson to play on. This project involved removing old concrete and putting in the new natural stone patio, sprinklers, lighting and new sod.

For the front yard, Richard built a custom white wood fence to match the white wood beams and fascias on our house. The design suits our house perfectly and draws a lot of attention from the neighbors. One even asked me for Richard’s business card as soon as the gate is done. The gate gives us privacy and makes the house look complete. Richard also covered the ground close to the window area with deep brown engineered bark to match the color of windows and tile of roof.

John Feldman of Ecocentrix chose the color palette of plants, and flowers for our front and back yards. All these little details: white wood fence, deep brown bark, plus fresh green grass, work with the existing house to create a perfect picture. Just Love it!

Richard has vision and creativity for landscape and design. Richard has top quality craftsmanship. He is polite, courteous, resolves problems promptly, and stays on budget. The speed of work surprised us and our neighbors. His crew worked really hard to finish the project in three weeks.

Richard created a relaxing and beautiful yard for us with his artistic talent. While we have a wonderful time in our new back yard, we definitely will think of Richard and his crew members. It’s been a pleasure to get to know John, Richard, and his wife Sue, who kept us on budget.

Richard has both amazing vision and fabulous execution…you need both! He is very hands on, accommodating, professional, informative, attentive, pays attention to detail, logical, and responds very quickly. Richard got my Hollywood meets Santa Barbara style and came to the unfinished house several times…he had a great concept and I said go for it. He was great at budgeting and keeping me in the loop every step of the way. His team was very polite, respectful, hard working, and great at their craft. Gonna miss everyone now that it’s over. I’m very impressed overall.

Bottom line at the top: Richard and his crew were amazing and exceeded our incredibly high expectations. Most people don’t even like their contractors, we LOVED Richard. He is honest, kind, and knows what he is doing. The project stayed on budget and on time (and it was a really large project including a complete pool renovation).

We did our homework and checked references and so we came into this project with pretty high expectations of Richard. Richard exceeded these expectations — we were (and are still) amazed by the job his team did. You will see other reviews say this — the photos online undersell Richard. In fact, Richard undersells Richard! When you look at Richard’s proposed budget and then start to learn what each line item includes, you realize that you are getting a lot for your money. Richard impressed us from the beginning. He came over to our place with an amazing landscape architect (John Feldman of Ecocentrix). I think he and John came over about three times to talk with us about what their vision would be and what we could do with our yard while we were still in the interview phase. They were both incredibly generous with their time and ideas (compared to many other folks who we interviewed who didn’t want to give anything away until we signed, making it hard to know what we’d be getting). We really liked what Richard and John came up with AND they were able to give us a bid that included the price with a guarantee that if we stuck to the general things we were talking about, that the price would not change. And he was absolutely right. This was completely different from the other people we interviewed who said that they couldn’t make any promises because they couldn’t see the structure underneath our backyard (we’re on a hillside). We did have an unexpected major gas leak and Richard took care of it as promised without any extra charge.

Richard has a great team that includes designers. Many design/build firms don’t have great designers. Richard’s team was amazing. Even though we were quite happy with the ideas Richard and John sketched out with us before we signed on to work with him, he and John continued to refine the design and came back with the most amazing, beautiful set of plans. I couldn’t stop smiling during our meeting because they came up with a design that fit us and our space perfectly. Richard’s crew was then able to create exactly what was on paper. Richard also clearly loves what he does and gets really invested in getting the project right. He was at our house almost every day checking on things. If something wasn’t perfect (e.g., a line wasn’t straight), he would have his guys redo it. He never made us feel like we were being too picky for pointing out things that we thought should be done differently. He never argued with us or pushed back on anything if we thought something should be redone (which was rare).

Also, we couldn’t believe how quick Richard’s team was—they were right on schedule. When we were out of town and still deciding on pavers, he mailed them to us so that the project could stay on time. Along the way we asked for some modifications and the team was very kind, patient, and accommodating. In the end, they were able to do in 8 weeks what other firms said would take 6+ months! His guys are at your place every day from 7-4 and they work hard!

We can’t say enough positive things about Richard and his team. We had 0 complaints (and we are complainers!) and would recommend Richard without reservations to anyone looking to do an outdoor renovation.

Most importantly, Richard was forever patient as we navigated the design, permitting, and construction process.

Hands down the best contractor experience I’ve ever had. Richard did exactly what he said he would do – build a sizable pool and landscape our entire backyard in 3 months.
